Chemical peel, using phenol or TCA (trichloroacetic acid), is our preferred method for skin resurfacing. It deals effectively with finely etched lines, small blemishes, and certain pigmentation irregularities; all result in the removal of outer skin layers.
The peel and the abrasion require one to two weeks for crust to come off. Then for an additional period of two to three weeks, the skin is pink and swollen. Pigmentation irregularities usually diminish over the ensuing months. Retin–A and skin bleaches are often recommended to precede the treatment. Commonly treated areas are permanently lighter in color than untreated surrounding areas, except in some pigmentation-prone patients are helped immensely by the bleaches used before and after the treatment. Often the dark pigmentation doesn’t occur. Sun exposure should be avoided for six months after peels and abrasions, except where only localized areas such as the lips are treated. Sun block with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 15 or higher is helpful and strongly recommended anytime you are outdoors.
Our plastic surgery clinic is located in Panama City, on Northwest Florida's Emerald Coast.
